Rug 5373
Spider Rock
Harriet Whitney
Harriet
Whitney is a member of the Yazzie-Whitney-Blake family, noted for
their weaving design innovations. This particular style of rug was
developed by members of her family when they were first learning to
weave. Grandma Rose Yazzie set up the warps and pointed to her pile of
tiny balls of leftover Burntwater vegetal colors, saying that they
could use all they wanted. Without enough of any one color to do a
conventional design, they created this imaginative pattern using sthe
scraps where the background color would usually be. Bruce loved the
result and the family has been weaving this style ever since.
Harriet is an excellent weaver and this rug is very skillfully woven.
Harriet lives in Chinle, AZ, about 60 miles north of our trading post.
